Cellulose-based composites have aroused increasing interest as potential replacements for fossil fuel-based plastics. In this work, transparent cellulose-grafted-PLA nanocomposite films were prepared by grafting polylactide (PLA) onto cellulose. PLA was synthesized by in situ ring opening polymerization from a regenerated cellulose matrix, using zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate (EmimAc) as solvent. A facile route was devised to modify the starting material (cellulose paper) by partial dissolution and regeneration that used an ionic liquid (IL) as a smart nanowelding agent to assemble nanometric cellulose structures. The influence of the proportion of ZnONPs (1–5 wt%) and $$\textit{L}$$ L -lactide (LA) monomers (10–70 wt%) used on the properties of the resulting nanocomposite films was examined by comparison with an all-cellulose composite (ACC) and pure cellulose paper. Incorporating ZnONPs and PLA was found to enhance the mechanical, barrier and optical properties of the films. The maximum tensile strength and best barrier properties were those of a film obtained from 5%ZnONPs and 70%LA. FTIR spectra confirmed a new form of interaction between PLA and the regenerated cellulose matrix. Also, XRD spectra revealed a transition from cellulose I to II and an increase in the proportion of noncrystalline cellulose through partial dissolution and regeneration. Although the surface morphology of the nanocomposite films was influenced by the presence of ZnONPs and PLA chains, their color and chemical structure were not. The transparent cellulose-grafted-PLA nanocomposite films obtained are highly promising as packaging materials.

Programa de doctorat: Doctorat en Enginyeria Tèxtil i Paperera The different researching lines in the field of Preservation and Conservation of Cultural Heritage on Paper tend to evolve and join other scientific fields in order to comprehend and embrace all the problematics caused by the aging of paper and its nature. Almost every decision made to stabilize the biochemical deterioration of cellulose is strongly conditioned by factors related to the papermaking process of that specific paper. These factors may include the fiber’s origin, the beating, the cooking and bleaching treatments, the technology used in the papermaking, the additives included in the fiber’s solution and posterior surface treatments such as the sizing or the coating among others. The field of Paper Engineering is focused on the development of papermaking technologies through new products and treatments. Those, in addition to the many testing methods used in this field –measurement of paper physical and optical properties, such as tensile strength or brightness ISO-, may be extrapolated to the field of Paper Conservation, adding new criteria and information about how any treatment affects the treated heritage, opening a window for new products and treatments, more bio-compatible with the cellulose nature, allowing to reduce the using of strong chemics and other procedures that are harmful for the environment.

The fact that most composites consist of polluting synthetic materials has prompted a search for biodegradable replacements based on cellulose fibers and polycaprolactone as potential packaging materials. In this work, we developed a green, efficient approach to rendering hydrophobic polycaprolactone (PCL) compatible with hy- drophilic cellulose fibers by using an ionic liquid as a nanowelding agent in the presence of zinc oxide nano- particles (ZnONPs). Transparent biobased nanocomposite films were thus directly obtained by in situ ring- opening polymerization (ROP) of e-caprolactone (CL) monomers onto the dissolved cellulose matrix by using the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([EMIM]Ac). [EMIM]Ac and ZnONPs were efficiently catalyzed e-caprolactone ROP under mild conditions. Cellulose-grafted PCL nanocomposite films were obtained by adding variable amounts of CL and ZnONPs to the cellulose matrix. The maximum grafting of 40% was achieved by using 5¦wt% ZnONPs and 70% CL. FTIR spectra confirmed the presence of PCL in the nano- composites. Also, FE-SEM revealed uniform dispersion of ZnONPs and PCL in the regenerated cellulose matrix, and trapping of nanoparticles in nanofibrils after the cellulose matrix was regenerated. X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra showed a decreased apparent crystallinity and crystallite size. The XRD results also confirmed that the crystal properties of the nanocomposite films and an all-cellulose composite (ACC) were almost identical. The mechanical, barrier and optical properties of the nanocomposite films were significantly better than those of the ACC film by effect of the incorporation of ZnONPs and PCL especially with 5¦wt% ZnONPs and 70% CL). The nanocomposite films exhibited acceptable antioxidant activity and UV-light barrier properties, so they hold promise for used in food packaging. Nanocomposite films are in fact multifunctional materials with the potential for use in cellulose-based food packaging by virtue of their being transparent and bio-based, and possessing very good water vapor and oxygen barrier properties. The global production of paper was more than 400 million tons in 2020, and about 40–50 kg of dry sludge/ton paper produced was generated. The management of this huge volume of solid waste material has become a serious problem for paper industry and an environmental challenge. Sustainable practices, alternative to disposal by landfilling, must be developed. The present work studied the potential of reusing sludge waste from paper manufacturer with the purpose to produce cellulose acetate films. La industria papelera española está comprometida con el reciclaje y apuesta por cumplir con los objetivos de una economía circular. Pero la elevada demanda de fibras recuperadas ha creado un alto impacto en los precios de ésta, produciendo una subida en los costes y una reducción de su disponibilidad. Además, se suma la gran diversidad de tipologías de fibras que pueden encontrarse en el papel recuperado, lo que dificulta el control, y el aprovechamiento total de la materia prima. El objetivo de este trabajo es poder optimizar el uso de las fibras para producir un ahorro en costes de materia prima, buscando la similitud de propiedades entre las fibras recuperadas, manteniendo constantes las propiedades físicas y mecánicas del papel fabricado. La presente investigación se enmarca en un estudio de I+D+i orientado al conocimiento de la potencialidad de las fibras de papel recuperadas, en colaboración con la papelera Alier (Rosselló, Lleida). This work studies the suitability of bacterial cellulose (BC) matrices to prepare enzymatically active nanocomposites, in a framework of more environmentally friendly methodologies. After BC production and purification, two kind of matrices were obtained: BC in aqueous suspension and BC paper. A lipase was immobilised onto the BC matrices by physical adsorption, obtaining Lipase/BC nanocomposites. Neither morphology nor crystallinity, measured by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-Ray diffractometry (XRD) respectively, of the BC were affected by the binding of the protein. The activity of Lipase/BC suspension and Lipase/BC paper was tested under different conditions, and the operational properties of the enzyme were evaluated. A shift towards higher temperatures, a broader pH activity range, and slight differences in the substrate preference were observed in the immobilised lipase, compared with the free enzyme. Specific activity was higher for Lipase/BC suspension (4.2 U/mg) than for Lipase/BC paper (1.7 U/mg) nanocomposites. However, Lipase/BC paper nanocomposites showed improved thermal stability, reusability, and durability. Enzyme immobilised onto BC paper retained 60% of its activity after 48 h at 60 ºC. It maintained 100% of the original activity after being recycled 10 times at pH 7 at 60 ºC and it remained active after being stored for more than a month at room temperature. The results suggested that lipase/BC nanocomposites are promising biomaterials for the development of green biotechnological devices with potential application in industrials bioprocesses of detergents and food industry and biomedicine. Lipase/BC paper nanocomposite might be a key component of bioactive paper for developing simple, handheld, and disposable devices.

In this study, the preparation of antibacterial paper was carried out using in situ synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on bleached cellulosic fiber matrix through chemical reduction of silver nitrate (AgNO3) by two reducing agents of sodium borohydride (NaBH4) and formaldehyde (HCHO) under different molar ratio conditions. After synthesis, during the fabrication of hand-sheets, about 0.05% polyethyleneimine (PEI) was added to fiber suspension as retention aid to promote linking between fiber and nano-particles. The produced papers were then characterized by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), UV-visible spectra analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In addition, the antimicrobial activity of AgNPs loaded papers was assessed. From the UV spectroscopy and antibacterial activity results, it was found that by increasing the molar ratio of HCHO:AgNO3 and NaBH4:AgNO3, the maximum absorption, minimum wavelength, minimum particle size, maximum amount of produced nano-silvers and maximum percentage reduction of E. coli (Gram-negative) and S. aureus (Gram-positive) can be obtained. The optimum synthesized samples were gained at 0.05:0.001 ratio in which the formation of agglomerates was minimum. According to the electron microscopy images and X-ray diffraction results, nano-silver particles were formed in a spherical shape with an average crystallite size of 10-100 nm and located mainly on the surface of the fibers. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that the formation of unstable AgNPs agglomerates makes formaldehyde inferior to sodium borohydride as an efficient reductive agent. The contribution of PEI in retention and immobilization of AgNPs against washing and drainage during synthesis and hand-sheet making process was confirmed by SEM images. Hence, it could play an important role in controlling and reducing the migration of the silver particles to the environment. The present results show that in situ synthesis of AgNPs in fiber matrix can provide an appropriate approach in developing antibacterial paper-based products

In the present work, the laccase kinetics upon the oxidation process of phenolic compounds was studied using cyclic voltammetry (CV). Several hydroxybenzoic and cinnamic acid compounds were analyzed, and the oxidation kinetics were correlated to their chemical structures. Significant differences were observed, and several structural parameters were identified as enhancers of the reaction rate. Folin–Ciocalteau, ultraviolet–visible light (UV-vis) spectrophotometry, and thin-layer chromatography (TLC) methods were also used to assess the laccase-oxidation process. The TLC results correlated well with those from the CV, while the UV-vis results do so with those from the Folin–Ciocalteau analysis. Results suggest that intermediate adducts, nondetectable by CV, Folin–Ciocalteau, UV-vis, and TLC analyses, may be formed during the oxidation process. A new approach for using bare glassy carbon electrodes to detect phenolic compounds and monitor their oxidation using laccase enzymes is presented

La celulosa es el polímero más abundante en la Tierra y en los últimos años ha ganado un amplio interés como fuente de nuevos productos con requisitos de procesamiento y de calidad diferentes a los procesos convencionales de obtención de pulpa y papel. Las restricciones en el cultivo de algodón y el aumento de la producción de las llamadas pulpas para disolver (dissolving pulps) ofrecen nuevas oportunidades al polímero de celulosa. Además, en comparación con los productos químicos derivados del petróleo, la celulosa permite el desarrollo de procesos y productos sostenibles y amigables con el medio ambiente. Este es el contexto que enmarca la presente tesis doctoral. El trabajo se desarrolló siguiendo básicamente dos líneas de investigación: por un lado la conversión de pulpas al sulfito a pulpas aptas para su disolución mediante la ayuda de tratamientos enzimáticos y químicos, y por otro lado la (bio)modificación de pulpas con alto contenido en celulosa. El planteamiento de estas dos líneas de investigación justificó el uso como materia prima de dos pulpas con distintas características. La primera parte de la tesis se centra en la aplicación de enzimas para el blanqueo de pulpa de conífera procedente de una cocción al sulfito. El objetivo era explorar el potencial de algunos compuestos naturales y sintéticos para la eliminación de lignina, así como aportar una mejora en el proceso de blanqueo. Los efluentes resultantes de cada etapa se caracterizaron con el fin de evaluar el impacto ambiental de los sistemas basados en el empleo de lacasas, un aspecto poco explorado en los estudios de bioblanqueo. A continuación, el mediador con mejor eficiencia para promover la deslignificación y potenciar el efecto de blanqueo, se utilizó para desarrollar una secuencia totalmente libre de cloro (TCF), formada por el sistema lacasa-mediador (LMS), una etapa quelante (Q) y finalmente una etapa de peróxido de hidrógeno reforzado con oxígeno presurizado (PO). La pulpa obtenida presentó una blancura ISO del 90% y un satisfactorio grado de polimerización. Con el fin de comprender los efectos de los tratamientos enzimáticos en la cristalinidad y en la superficie de la cadena de celulosa, las muestras se analizaron mediante técnicas de termogravimetría y difracción de rayos X. En la segunda parte de la tesis, se estudió la conversión de estas pulpas bioblanqueadas en pulpas aptas para disolver. La purificación y modificación se llevó a cabo con la ayuda de tratamientos químicos y enzimáticos, concretamente con extracciones alcalinas fuertes y enzimas hidrolíticas (endoglucanasas). La combinación de ambos procedimientos permitió disminuir el contenido de hemicelulosas así como aumentar la solubilidad de la celulosa, aspectos deseados para su aplicación final. También se estudió la modificación de celulosa pura (fibras comerciales para disolver) mediante sistemas enzimáticos, pero enfocando la modificación en la necesidad de conferir nuevas propiedades. En la línea de mejorar la reactividad y la accesibilidad, el estudio proporciona conocimiento para entender el papel que juegan las endoglucanasas en combinación con extracciones alcalinas fuertes en la estructura de la celulosa. Por otro lado, se evaluó el uso del sistema lacasa-TEMPO para oxidar la estructura de la celulosa y conseguir una mejora de las propiedades de resistencia mecánica. Esta modificación aportó una importante mejora de la resistencia en húmedo en la pasta tratada, atribuida a la presencia de grupos aldehídos en las cadenas celulósicas capaces de generar enlaces hemiacetales (inter-fibras) con los hidroxilos libres. El potencial del sistema lacasa-TEMPO se mejoró introduciendo una etapa de pre-refino. La última parte del trabajo ilustra la modificación química mediante reacciones de acetilación (heterogénea o homogénea) de las pulpas para disolver obtenidas a partir de procesos enzimáticos. Los resultados se compararon con una fibra para disolver disponible comercialmente, obtenida por métodos químicos tradicionales. Para concluir, la "bioconversión" se llevó a cabo des de las etapas iniciales del blanqueo de la pulpa procedente de una cocción al sulfito hasta la determinación de las características propias de las pulpas para disolver, consiguiendo preparar films de acetato de celulosa, como producto final., Cellulose is the most abundant polymer in the Earth and recently has gained wide interest as a source for new products with distinct processing and quality requirements compared to conventional processes for obtaining pulp and paper. The restrictions on cotton cultivation and the increase of dissolving pulp manufacturing provide new opportunities to cellulose polymer. In addition, compared to petroleum based chemicals, cellulose enables sustainable approaches and environmentally friendly products. This is the context that framed the present doctoral thesis. The work focused on two different research lines, namely: conversion of sulfite pulp to dissolving-grade with the aid of enzymatic and chemical treatments, and the (bio)modification of high-cellulose content pulps. The approach of two research lines, justifies the use of two pulps with different characteristics, as a feedstock. The first part of the thesis involved the use of enzymes to bleach softwood sulfite pulp. The aim was to explore the potential of natural and synthetic compounds for lignin removal and provide an improvement in the bleaching process. The effluents resulting from each stage in the sequence were analyzed with a view to assessing the environmental impact of the laccase treatment. Afterwards, the mediator with best efficiency to promote delignification and enhance the bleaching effect, was used to develop a totally chlorine free (TCF) sequence composed of laccase-mediator system (LMS), a chelating (Q) stage and a hydrogen peroxide stage reinforced with pressurized oxygen (PO). The resulting pulp exhibited an ISO brightness of 90% and a satisfactory degree of polymerization. In order to understand the effects of enzymatic treatments caused in crystallinity and the surface of the cellulose chain, samples were analyzed by thermogravimetry and X-ray diffraction techniques. The second part of the thesis was based on the conversion of these biobleached sulfite pulps to dissolving-grade. Purification was carried out with the aid of chemical and enzymatic treatments, specifically employing strong alkaline extractions and hydrolytic enzymes (endoglucanases). The combination of both procedures led to reduce the amount of hemicelluloses and increase the solubility behavior of cellulose, desired aspects for its final application. Moreover, pure cellulose modification (commercial dissolving-grade pulp) by means of enzymatic systems, but with the interest to bring and develop new properties to the final products was also studied. With the purpose of improving reactivity and accessibility, the study gains knowledge on understanding the role of endoglucanases in combination with strong alkaline extraction to cellulose structure. On the other side, laccase-TEMPO system was used to evaluate the improvement of strength properties through oxidative modification of cellulose. A significant improvement in wet strength attributed to the formation of aldehyde groups in cellulose chains that facilitated inter-fiber bonding through hemiacetal linkages was observed. The ability of laccase-TEMPO system was improved by introducing a pre-refining step. The last part of the thesis investigates the suitability of dissolving grade-pulp obtained by chemo-enzymatic processes for heterogeneous- and homogeneous-phase acetylation reactions (chemical modification). The results were compared with those from a commercially-available dissolving fiber grade, obtained by traditional chemical methods, which was used as reference. Surface acetylated handsheets and transparent cellulose acetate films were achieved. To conclude, "bioconversion" was explored from the initial stages, with the need to bleach pulp resulted from a sulfite cooking; to the transformation stages, where dissolving pulps characteristics were achieved; until the preparation of acetate films as a final product.

This study focused on the application of the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) to determine the effects of operational parameters on the dark Fenton oxidation of a barley straw effluent (BSE) in a lab-scale experiment, with a chemical oxygen demand (COD) of 749 mg·L-1 O2 at pH = 3. A central composite face-centered design (CCF) with 17 experiments was adopted for our study, since responses could be simply related to the chosen factor (COD, UV254 or UV280 removal) using linear or quadratic models. This methodology let us find the effects and interactions of the studied variables and their roles on the efficiency of treatment process. In the optimization, the correlation coefficients for the model (R2) were 0.996 for COD, 0.995 for UV254 and 0.994 for UV280. Optimized reaction conditions were established as pH = 3, T = 40 º C, [H2O2] = 1800 mg·L-1 and [Fe (II)] = 250 mg·L-1. Under these conditions; 120 minutes treatment resulted in a 81.6 % COD removal, an 89.1% UV254 removal and 93.0 % UV280 removal

This thesis deals with the surface modification of cellulosic substrates by use of chemo-enzymatic methods. Functionalizing cellulose is intended to adjust its properties for various purposes, but particularly for obtaining a chemical feedstock for the production of cellulose derivatives with a variety of uses. At present, cellulosic substrates are chemically or enzymatically modified by treating fibres in aqueous suspensions prior to formation substrates. In this doctoral work, treatments were applied to previously formed cellulosic substrates (FCS), providing advantages in terms of sheet formation, chemical consumption and manufacturing speed. A non-enzymatic and an enzymatic approach to substrate functionalization were examined, with emphasis on the latter. This work is part of the research conducted by the CELBIOTECH Group (UPC-BarcelonaTech) within the framework of Spain's MICINN Projects FUNCICEL (CTQ2009-12904), BIOSURFACEL (CTQ2012-34109) and BIOFIBRECELL (CTQ2010-20238-CO3-01), and the BIORENEW integrated project of the Sixth Framework Program (NMP2-CT-2006-026456). β--cyclodextrins (β--CD) were used to facilitate the chemical modification of three different commercial FCS. Grafting of the substrates was assessed by scanning electron microscopy and FTIR analysis. Drug delivery kinetics were analyzed by UV spectroscopy after loading of the β--CD-grafted substrates with chlorhexidine digluconate (digCHX). Several grafted substrates were found to absorb substantial amounts of active molecules and to release them over a long period (about 20 days). The use of enzyme systems for surface treatments of FCS is still in its infancy. This doctoral work was intended to fill the gap as far as possible. In preliminary tests, the surface hydrophobization was accomplished onto commercial FCS by using laccase in combination with hydrophobic compounds. The efficiency of the method was increased by using lignosulfonates, which improved the surface distribution of hydrophobic compounds, increased hydrophobicity and helped preserve enzyme activity. The influence of processing conditions including LG dose and treatment time was examined, with a view to their optimization for further increased hydrophobicity. Surface enzyme treatments evolved into the preparation of a functionalization solution (FS), consisting of an enzymatic product that was subsequently applied to the surface of FCS. This method was also effective and provided major advantages for industrial implementation; in fact, it is the subject of an international patent application. Surface application of the functionalization solution to FCS was found to confer them hydrophobic and antioxidant properties by effect of physico-chemical interactions between FS and the substrate. Cellulose model surfaces were used to assess FS adsorption, and the WDT, WCA, SEM, AFM and SFE techniques to characterize the treated FCS. Efficient fibre bonding and chemical functionalization were confirmed by thorough washing and Soxhlet extraction of the substrates. As shown here for the first time, surface enzyme treatments have the potential to confer advanced properties to FCS. The performance of the proposed cellulose functionalization technique was assessed by using laccases from various microorganisms. A better understanding of the reaction mechanisms and physico-chemical interactions behind the laccase treatments, and also of FS-substrate interactions, was acquired by using various analytical techniques including DLS, QCM, FTIR, UV-VIS spectroscopy, Z-potential, Turbiscan® and cyclic voltammetry. The chemical structure of the resulting enzyme-oxidized molecules, the sequence for the oxidation reaction, and the potential grafting mechanisms of enzyme-modified compounds to cellulose, were proposed. The effects of the alkyl chain length of the gallates studied and curing treatments used were analysed in terms of the development of hydrophobic and antioxidant properties., La present tesi tracta sobre la modificació superficial de substrats cel·lulòsics utilitzant mètodes químics i enzimàtics. La funcionalització de la cel·lulosa consisteix en ajustar-ne les seves propietats, per a poder-la utilitzar en gran varietat d'aplicacions. Habitualment aquesta modificació s'aconsegueix tractant les fibres en suspensió aquosa i abans de la formació del substrat. No obstant, en la present tesi els tractaments s'apliquen utilitzant substrats cel·lulòsics ja formats (FCS), obtenint una sèrie d'avantatges en termes de formació, consum de químics, i velocitat de fabricació. S’han estudiat dos enfocaments diferents per a la funcionalització: tècniques no-enzimàtiques i enzimàtiques. Els esforços s’han centrat en l'enfoc enzimàtic. Aquest treball es va dur a terme en el grup de recerca CELBIOTECH (UPCBarcelonTech), en el marc dels projectes FUNCICEL (CTQ2009-12904), BIOSURFACEL (CTQ2012-34109) , BIOFIBRECELL (CTQ2010-20238-CO3-01), del MICINN Espanyol i el Projecte integrat BIORENEW (NMP2-CT-2006-026456) del sisè Programa Marc. Pel que fa a la funcionalització no-enzimàtica, s’han utilitzat β-ciclodextrines (β-CD) per a la modificació superficial de tres FCS comercials. L'empelt s’ha avaluat mitjançant microscòpia electrònica de rastreig i anàlisi FTIR. Els substrats empeltats amb β-CDs s’han carregat amb digluconat de clorhexidina (digCHX), i s’ha analitzat l’alliberament d’aquest principi actiu utilitzant espectroscòpia UV. Diversos substrats han estat capaços de retenir quantitats significatives de digCHX, i de mantenir-ne l’alliberament durant períodes de temps de fins a 20 dies. La funcionalització enzimàtica per al desenvolupament de derivats de la cel·lulosa ha guanyat interès en la comunitat científica i industrial darrerament. No obstant, l'ús de sistemes enzimàtics superficials encara es troba en una fase molt prematura; la present tesi fa èmfasi en aquest aspecte. En un primer estudi s’analitza la hidrofobització superficial de FCS comercials, mitjançant una lacasa en combinació amb compostos hidròfobs. L'eficiència s’ha vist augmentada amb l'ús de lignosulfonats (SL), els quals milloren la distribució superficial, augmenten els nivells d’hidrofobicitat, i ajuden a preservar l'activitat enzimàtica. La dosi de LG i el temps de tractament s’han optimitzat resultant en una major hidrofobicitat. Seguidament, els tractaments han evolucionat cap a un nou mètode basat en l’obtenció d'una solució funcionalitzadora (FS), consistent en un producte derivat d’una reacció enzimàtica, el qual és aplicat posteriorment a la superfície dels FCS. Aquest mètode també s’ha mostrat efectiu, i proporciona avantatges importants respecte a la possible aplicació industrial; de fet, el nou mètode ha permès realitzar una sol·licitud internacional de patent. L’aplicació de la FS a la superfície de FCS els confereix propietats hidrofòbica i antioxidant gràcies a les interaccions fisicoquímiques que es produeixen. S’han utilitzat superfícies model de cel·lulosa per tal d’avaluar l'adsorció de la FS, i s’han emprat les tècniques de WDT, WCA, SEM, AFM i SFE per caracteritzar-les. La força de l’enllaç s’avalua mitjançant rentats agressius i extraccions Soxhlet. Es demostra per primer cop el potencial dels tractaments enzimàtics superficials per a conferir propietats avançades als substrats cel·lulòsics. La tècnica també s’ha assajat emprant diverses lacases. S’han utilitzat diverses tècniques d’anàlisi per estudiar els mecanismes de reacció, i les interaccions FS-substrat. Les tècniques han estat: DLS, QCM, FTIR, espectroscopia UVVIS, potencial-Z, Turbiscan® i Voltametria Cíclica. S’ha proposat l’estructura química de les molècules resultants de l’oxidació del LG, els possibles mecanismes d'oxidació, i possibles mecanismes d'empelt entre els compostos modificats i la cel·lulosa. També s’ha analitzat l'efecte de la longitud de la cadena alquílica i dels tractaments tèrmics en les propietats antioxidant i hidrofòbica.

L’actual projecte es fonamenta en l’estudi de l’estat actual de l’Ajuntament i la Casa Episcopal del poble de Villores (Els Ports, Castelló de la Plana) ubicats al centre històric de la Vila, per determinar la tipologia constructiva i el funcionament estructural de les edificacions i les lesions existents que marcaran el punt de partida. Paral·lelament es defineixen les necessitats organitzatives dels espais amb col·laboració amb l’Ajuntament. Continua el seu desenvolupament estudiant les diverses possibilitats organitzatives dels espais i el finalitza amb l’elecció de la proposta que millor s’ajusta als criteris mestres: minimització de l’impacte sobre l’estructura existent, maximització de l’aprofitament de la superfície útil donada i implantació d’energies renovables; per l’adequació dels edificis als nous usos proposats.

La present tesi s’emmarca dins d’una de les línies del Grup de Recerca Paperer i Gràfic (CIPAGRAF), del Departament d’Enginyeria Tèxtil i Paperera de l’Escola Tècnica Superior d’Enginyeries Industrial i Aeronàutica de Terrassa, encaminada a l’aplicacióde la Biotecnologia per desenvolupar nous sistemes enzimàtics per al blanqueig depastes i modificació de fibres cel·lulòsiques. La implantació d’etapes enzimàtiques en les seqüències de blanqueig de pasta de paper a nivell industrial continua essent, avui en dia, un dels principals reptes en el camp de la investigació paperera. La reducció de l’impacte ambiental, l’optimització de costos, així com el desenvolupament de productes paperers amb propietats noves i millorades, justifiquen l’estudi de noves seqüències enzimàtiques basades en l’aplicació de sistemes lacasa-mediador. La utilització d’una matèria prima renovable, el kenaf, està en sintonia amb el creixent interès de l’ús de fibres no fusteres per a l’obtenció de nous productes lignocel·lulòsics d’alt valor afegit. Així doncs, aquesta tesi es fonamenta en l’ús d’enzims per a blanquejar pasta de kenaf. Les seqüències de blanqueig enzimàtic estudiades consten de diferents tractaments amb el sistema lacasa-mediador (Etapa L). Les lacases utilitzades en aquesta etapa provenen dels fongs Pycnoporus cinnabarinus i Trametes villosa, les quals s’apliquen amb diferents mediadors naturals (compostos fenòlics derivats de la lignina) i amb un mediador sintètic. L’etapa enzimàtica es completa amb diferents etapes de blanqueig químic (quelant, peròxid d’hidrogen i peròxid d’hidrogen pressuritzat). Al final de les seqüències s’obtenen, en funció del mediador utilitzat en l’etapa enzimàtica, fibres de kenaf amb un alt contingut de cel·lulosa i altes blancors. En aquest sentit, en el transcurs de l’experimentació s’ha constatat la importància de la naturalesa química del mediador, ja que els diferents radicals fenoxi formats en l’etapa enzimàtica determinen la capacitat oxidativa del sistema lacasa-mediador. Per altra banda, els resultats obtinguts remarquen el paper de la composició química de la lignina de kenaf en el procés enzimàtic. La capacitat oxidativa de la lacasa augmenta en presència de pasta de kenaf i la quantitat d’àcids hexenurònics presents en la mateixa limita el grau de blancor assolit en els diferents tractaments, encara que el resultat final es semblant o superior a una pasta TCF convencional. L’aplicació de xilanases després de l’etapa enzimàtica lacasa-mediador es mostra efectiva en l’eliminació d’aquests àcids, essent una possible via de millora als tractaments proposats en la present tesi., The present thesis has been performed in the research group CIPAGRAF (Grup de Recerca Paperer i Gràfic) of the Departament d'Enginyeria Tèxtil i Paperera at the Escola Tècnica Superior d'Enginyeries Industrial i Aeronàutica de Terrassa. One of the research topics of the group is the application of enzymes in pulp biobleaching processes and in the modification of cellulosic fibers. The implementation of enzymatic stages in paper pulp bleaching sequences is, at present, one of the main challenges of the research in the paper industry. The application of laccase-mediator systems can lead to a reduction of environmental impact and to cost optimization, as well as to the development of paper-derived products with novel and improved properties. The use of a renewable raw material -kenaf- is in accordance with the growing interest in the utilization of non-wood fibers for the production of new high-added value lignocellulosic products. Consequently, the present thesis is based on the use of enzymes for kenaf pulp bleaching. The enzymatic bleaching sequences studied involve different treatments with the laccase-mediator system (Stage L). The two fungal enzymes used in this stage- Pycnoporus cinnabarinus and Trametes villosa laccases-have been assisted by different natural mediators (lignin-derived phenolic compounds) and a synthetic one. The enzymatic stage has been completed with different chemical bleaching stages (chelating, hydrogen peroxide and pressurized hydrogen peroxide). At the end of the sequences, kenaf fibers with high cellulose levels and brightness were obtained. The significance of the chemical nature of the mediator has been emphasized because the different phenoxy radicals formed in the enzymatic stage determine the oxidative capacity of the laccase-mediator system. In addition, the results obtained also show the role of the chemical composition of kenaf lignin in the enzymatic process. The laccase oxidative capacity increases in the presence of kenaf pulp, and the amount of hexenuronic acids present limits the degree of brightness. Nevertheless, for the enzymatic treatments, the final results are similar to or better than for a conventional chlorine-free treatment. The application of xilanases after the laccase-mediator stage has been shown to be efficient in hexenuronic acids removal, opening possible new improvements to the treatments reported in this work.

Actualmente en todo el mundo se consume una gran cantidad de papel reciclado. Ello ha provocado la fabricación de papel que contiene muchos tipos de impurezas, por lo que las empresas papeleras se están viendo con la necesidad de desarrollar métodos para controlar la calidad del papel entrante para así garantizar su calidad. Para ello en este trabajo se investiga un método muy rápido y no destructivo para identificar diferentes tipos de papel que permita desechar el papel entrante que no cumpla con unos requisitos mínimos de calidad. De este modo se puede mejorar el comportamiento de la máquina de papel y al mismo tiempo asegurar la calidad del producto final. Ello se hace en base al estudio de los espectros FTIR (espectroscopia del infrarrojo medio por transformada de Fourier) y NIR (espectroscopia del infrarrojo cercano) tratados mediante ICA (análisis de componentes independientes) como técnica multivariable de extracción de características para reducir la cantidad de variables utilizadas y k-NN (k vecinos más cercanos) como técnica de clasificación. Los resultados experimentales muestran que es posible identificar con éxito más de un 90% de las muestras estudiadas, de una forma rápida, muy automatizada y de forma no destructiva.

Premi extraordinari doctorat curs 2011-2012, àmbit d’Enginyeria Industrial This research project originated from interest in assessing the potential of enzyme technology (particularly laccase-based systems) for the biomodification of sisal specialty fibres by using environmentally friendly processes. This doctoral work focused on two different research lines, namely: biobleaching and enzymatic functionalization of sisal pulp fibres. The study was started by assessing the use of natural, potentially cost-effective phenolic compounds as substitutes for expensive, potentially toxic laccase mediators. The tendency of natural phenols to either promote delignification or couple onto pulp was examined with a view to assessing their potential for either bleaching or functionalizing sisal fibres. In the biobleaching study, totally chlorine free (TCF) sequences were implemented in order to compare the efficiency of a selected natural mediator and a well-known synthetic mediator, both in the presence and absence of a xylanase pre-treatment. The effluents resulting from each stage in the sequence were analysed with a view to assessing the environmental impact of the laccase treatments ¿a scarcely explored aspect of biobleaching sequences. The xylanase stage proved highly efficient in reducing the HexA content of sisal fibres and in boosting the bleaching effect of the laccase treatments. The proposed TCF sequences provided high-cellulose sisal pulp with brightness above 80% ISO and a reduced HexA content; also, they exhibited improved performance and a reduced impact on effluent properties relative to the use of the synthetic mediator. Two different approaches to fibre functionalization were explored, namely: lignin modification (biografting) and cellulose modification (laccase¿TEMPO oxidation). Biografting of phenolic compounds was for the first time studied in sisal pulp. Covalent binding of the originally assayed phenolic compounds to sisal fibres during the laccase treatment was exposed by a novel analytical approach based on pyrolysis-GC/MS. The phenolic compound showing the highest tendency to couple to fibres was selected to investigate biografting under different reaction conditions and to evaluate the extent of phenol coupling via various pulp properties. Biografting efficiency was enhanced by refining the fibres prior to the enzyme treatment, which provided improved strength-related properties in the resulting paper. The use of the laccase-TEMPO system to oxidatively modify cellulose and improve strength-related properties in sisal pulp was for the first time evaluated as an environmentally friendly alternative to existing halide-based systems. The first part of this study revealed that the laccase¿TEMPO system considerably improved wet strength in sisal pulp by effect of the formation of a substantial amount of aldehyde groups in cellulose chains that facilitated inter-fibre bonding through hemiacetal linkages. The influence of process variables on various properties of the oxidized fibres and resulting paper was assessed by using a three-variable statistical plan. The conditions maximizing functionalization and the improvement in paper strength properties were used to design treatments of increased efficiency that exposed the potential of laccase¿TEMPO oxidation for biorefining pulp fibres. Analytical methods including pyrolysis-GC/MS, polyelectrolyte titration, conductimetric titration, carbohydrate determination by HPLC, fibre morphology analysis by SEM and thermogravimetry were used to both characterize the raw material and gain a better understanding of the reaction mechanisms behind the different laccase-based treatments. Some of the analyses were performed by collaborating research groups at IRNAS (Seville, Spain) and the Department of Chemical Engineering of the University of Huelva (Spain). Also, part of this doctoral work was conducted at the Institute of Paper Science and Technology of the Georgia Institute of Technology (Atlanta, USA). Award-winning

Recycled paper is extensively used worldwide. In the last decades its market has expanded considerably. The increasing use of recycled paper in papermaking has led to the production of paper containing several types of impurities. Consequently, wastepaper mills are forced to implement quality control schemes for evaluating the incoming wastepaper stock, thus guarantying the specifications of the final product. The main objective of this work is to present a fast and reliable system for identifying different paper types. Therefore, undesirable paper types can be refused, improving the performance of the paper machine and the final quality of the paper manufactured. For this purpose two fast techniques, i.e., Fourier transform mid-infrared (FTIR) and reflectance near-infrared (*IR) were applied to acquire the infrared spectra of the paper samples. *ext, four processing multivariate methods, i.e., principal component analysis (PCA), canonical variate analysis (CVA), extended canonical variate analysis (ECVA) and support vector machines (SVM) were employed in the feature extraction –or dimension reduction– stage. Afterwards, the k nearest neighbors algorithm (k**) was used in the classification phase. Experimental results show the usefulness of the proposed methodology and the potential of both FTIR and *IR spectroscopic methods. Using the FTIR spectrum in association with SVM and k** the system achieved maximum classification accuracy of 100%, whereas using the *IR spectrum in association with ECVA or SVM and k** the system achieved maximum classification accuracy of 96.4%

Premi extraordinari doctorat curs 2010-2011, àmbit d’Enginyeria Enginyeria Industrial The aim of this thesis is to modify flax pulp fibres (Linum usitatissimum) by more friendly environmental processes. Pulp and paper research is focussing through enzyme systems investigation for developing green chemistry technologies due to existing environmental concerns and to legal restrictions. Moreover, it exists also an increasing strategic interest in using flax fibres to obtain high-quality specialty papers. That is why we study the application of biotechnology as an efficient alternative to traditional industrial processes based on the use of chemical agents. This work is framed by two of the main research topics of the Paper and Graphic Specialty Laboratory in the Textile and Paper Engineering Department of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. One research line is based on pulp bleaching and is focused basically on the study of enzymatic systems as biobleaching agents; the other research topic that has been recently introduced in our investigation group is the use of enzymes as functionalisation agents by promoting the grafting of several compounds. Laccase is the main enzyme used in this thesis; it is an oxidoreductase that can assist reactions in an eco-friendly way since laccase uses air and produces water as the only by-product. Moreover, laccase can work under mill conditions and has wide application potential. The first part of this thesis involved the use of enzymes to bleach flax pulp. The aim was to explore the potential of various natural mediators (lignin-derived compounds) for delignifying flax fibres in order to identify the most efficient and ecofriendly choice among them. Afterwards, we assessed the use of various enzyme delignification stages in an industrial bleaching sequence. The ensuing totally chlorine free (TCF) sequence comprised various laccase-mediator system treatments (L stage) followed by a by a chelating stage (Q stage) and a subsequent bleaching step with hydrogen peroxide (Po stage). A xylanase pretreatment was additionally carried out. Laccases used came from the fungi Pycnoporus cinnabarinus and Myceliophthora thermophila; the performance of several natural mediators was compared with the obtained with the application of various synthetic mediators. In addition, the lack of studies on the properties of effluents from the treatment of non-wood pulp with laccase and natural mediators led A-1 A-2 us to examine effluent properties upon biotreatments and after different bleaching stages. The results obtained warrant upscaling any of the biobleaching sequences for flax pulp as they provide sustainable flax fibre with a high cellulose content and brightness above 80% ISO. The use of xylanase pretreatment was found to efficiently remove HexA and enhance delignification by laccase. Award-winning

Flax soda/AQ pulps were treated with different fungal laccase-mediator combinations followed by physical and chemical characterization of the pulps to obtain a thorough understanding of the laccase/mediator effects on hexenuronic acid (HexA) removal and the coupling of mediator onto pulps for fiber functionalization. Large differences were found and the presence of lauryl gallate (LG) during Trametes villosa laccase (TvL) treatment (TvL+LG) resulted in a much larger reduction of pulp-linked HexA than the combination of p-coumaric acid (PCA) and Pycnoporus cinnabarinus laccase (PcL). A major portion of LG became attached to the pulp as revealed by an increase in the kappa number and further confirmed by thioacidolysis and (1)H NMR analysis of solubilized pulp fractions. Additional experiments with other chemical pulps and isolated pulp xylan and lignin revealed that HexA seems to be the sole pulp component attacked by TvL+LG. As a substrate for TvL, the reaction preference order is PCAHexALG.

La presente tesis se enmarca en una de las líneas de investigación del Departamento de Ingeniería Textil y Papelera que se orienta a la Aplicación de la Biotecnología en los Procesos de Fabricación del Papel, en particular la aplicación de métodos biotecnológicos en la operación de Refinado para potenciar la modificación superficial de las fibras celulósicas mediante la utilización de enzimas, de manera que una respuesta positiva generará la obtención de una etapa de "biorefinado" aportando ventajas en la disminución del consumo energético -requerido por el refinado mecánico- y en la consecución de tecnologías limpias que cumplan con las leyes medioambientales.En la investigación de nuevas técnicas biotecnológicas (enzimas) que se introducen en la operación de refinado se utilizan enzimas hidrolíticas (celulasas), y debido al gran auge de las enzimas oxidativas (lacasas) en los procesos de bioblanqueo se estudia la influencia indirecta que puede realizar sobre la morfología de las fibras y consecuentemente en el proceso de refinado y la calidad del papel. Los efectos de estas enzimas son evaluados en pastas kraft con secuencias de blanqueo ECF y TCF de Eucalyptus globulus.La obtención de una etapa de "biorefinado" está influenciada por la efectividad de las enzimas en favorecer el proceso de refinado y, al mismo tiempo, depende de las variables del proceso, siendo la materia prima uno de los parámetros más importantes que modifica la aptitud al refinado; así lo revela el comportamiento diferencial de las pastas ECF y TCF donde la severidad de los procesos de obtención (cocción y blanqueo) confieren propiedades específicas a las fibras y, de acuerdo a las condiciones de operación, causarán mayor o menor alteración sobre la morfología de las fibras, de manera que estas alteraciones condicionaran la aptitud al refinado de las pastas. La comparación de los dos tipos de pastas permite afirmar que la secuencia TCF causa mayor cambio estructural en las fibras y, como consecuencia, se obtiene una más rápida respuesta en la operación de refinado.En la pasta ECF, al potenciar su respuesta al refinado con la aplicación de la enzima Cel9B (1,4-β endoglucanasa) de Paenibacillus barcinonensis se revela un valor añadido al conseguir una aceleración de los efectos primarios y secundarios del refinado, y fenómenos como la mayor hidratación en la matriz interna de las fibras favorecen los mecanismos de cohesión interfibrillar que generan resistencia en el papel. Existe un efecto de biorefinado, respuesta que permite catalogar a la enzima Cel9B como "coadyuvante del refinado", su aplicación permite reducir la energía de refinado para conseguir determinadas propiedades de resistencia. En las pastas TCF la acción de Cel9B también genera cambios morfológicos en las fibras, verificando así su actuación sobre las fibras celulósicas. Para evaluar la posibilidad de un sinergismo entre celulasas que incremente el efecto individual de la enzima Cel9B en el refinado se estudia el sistema endo-exo entre endoglucanasas (Cel9B) y exoglucanasas (Cel48C); este posible efecto sinérgico se descarta ya que no se obtienen propiedades de resistencia superiores al efecto individual de la celulasa Cel9B.La etapa de biorefinado con la enzima Cel9B permite identificar en su estructura modular [GH9-CBD3c- Fn3-CBD3b] el dominio responsable de la modificación superficial de las fibras. La aplicación de las celulasas recombinantes de Cel9B: dominio catalítico [GH9-CBD3c], dominios de unión a celulosa [Fn3- CBD3b] y [CBD3b] revelan que la mayor contribución del efecto de biorefinado se debe a la actuación del dominio catalítico [GH9-CBD3c], resultados innovadores que demuestran que la aplicación de esta celulasa recombinante produce resistencia en el papel con una mejor respuesta en la resistencia al desgarro en comparación a la enzima completa Cel9B.Con respecto a la aplicación de la enzima lacasa de Trametes villosa junto con el mediador HBT -1- hidroxibenzotriazol- se encuentra que el sistema lacasa-mediador oxida la celulosa de las pastas blanqueadas (generación de grupos carbonilo) y modifica el contenido de los ácidos carboxílicos presentes en la pasta TCF, y a su vez las propiedades electrocinéticas; estos resultados se vinculan a la remoción parcial de los ácidos hexenurónicos [HexAs]. También se ha encontrado que el sistema lacasamediador no degrada la celulosa, por consiguiente su influencia en el refinado de la pasta TCF se considera positiva.La remoción de los ácidos hexenurónicos con el sistema lacasa-mediador cobra especial interés al verificar su influencia en las determinaciones del número kappa y en la estabilidad de las propiedades ópticas; así el sistema lacasa-mediador reduce la reversión de la blancura por su efecto en la eliminación de los HexAs. El estudio de termoamarillamiento y fotoamarillamiento de la pasta TCF pone en evidencia la interferencia de los HexAs en la reversión de la blancura, siendo la aplicación del sistema lacasamediador una alternativa potencial para obtener papeles permanentes y resistentes. Además la remoción de HexAs modifica las propiedades de las pastas en la operación del refinado, un efecto muy importante se observa al aumentar la drenabilidad para un valor específico de resistencia manteniendo la energía requerida en el refinado., The present thesis is placed within the frame of one of the lines of research of the Paper and Graphic Research Group (CIPAGRAF) -Department of Textile and Paper Engineering (DETIP), Technical University of Catalonia (UPC)-. The study is orientated to the Application of the Biotechnology in the Paper Manufacturing Processes. It deals with the application of biotechnological methods in the refining operation to promote the modification of the cellulose fibers by means of the utilization of enzymes. The goal is to get a stage of "biorefining" contributing to the decrease of the energy consumption - needed by the mechanical refining - and in the use of clean technologies that comply with the environmental laws.In the research of new biotechnological techniques (enzymes) hydrolytic enzymes (cellulases) are used.Also, due to the growing importance of oxidative enzymes (lacases), it is studied their influence on fibers, on refining and in the quality of paper.The effects of these enzymes are evaluated in ECF and TCF kraft pulps of Eucalyptus globulus.Biorefining depends of the efficacy of enzymes to enhance the refining process. At the same time the raw material highly influence the refining process. That is proved by the differences of refining behaviour shown by the ECF and TCF pulps.The different severity of the production processes (pulping and bleaching) gives specific properties to the fiber, as they cause different alterations of their morphology. These alterations determine the refining aptitude of the pulps. The comparison of both types of pulps (ECF and TCF) allows to affirm that the sequence TCF causes major structural changes in the fibers and, as a consequence, a more rapid response is obtained in the refining operation.The enzyme Cel9B (1,4- β endoglucanase) of Paenibacillus barcinonensis promotes a significant response in the refining of the ECF pulp, this fact is revealed by an increase of the primary and secondary refining effects. Phenomena like the higher hydration in the internal matrix of the fibers aids the mechanisms of interfibrillar cohesion that generate the mechanical resistance in the paper.This biorefining effect allows to catalogue the enzyme Cel9B as a "refining helper" or "booster". Its application allows to reduce the refining energy and, also, to obtain certain strength properties.In the TCF pulp the action of Cel9B also generates changes in the refined fibers.To evaluate the possibility of a synergistic effect between cellulases that increase the individual effect of the enzyme Cel9B, the system endoglucanase (Cel9B) - exoglucanase (Cel48C) was studied. The possible synergistic effect was discarded since the strength properties attained are not higher than the individual effect of the cellulase Cel9B.The biorefining stage with enzyme Cel9B allows to identify the responsible domain of the fibers modification in its modular structure [GH9-CBD3c-Fn3-CBD3b]. The application of recombinant cellulose Cel9B: catalytic domain [GH9-CBD3c], cellulose-binding domains [Fn3-CBD3b] and [CBD3b] shows that the greatest contribution of the biorefining effect is due to the performance of catalytic domain [GH9 - CBD3c]. These innovative results show that the application of this recombinant cellulase produces increases of paper resistance, specially in tear strength in comparison with the complete enzyme Cel9B.

La tesi que ens ocupa, parteix de I'interes de blanquejar pasta kraft d'eucaliptus a traves de tecnologies netes, es a dir, utilitzant metodes mes respectuosos pel medi ambient. La motivacio per a la realitzacio d'aquesta tesi, sorgeix de la problematica ambiental ja coneguda que existeix amb relacio a la contaminacio produida pels reactius utilitzats en el blanqueig de pastes per a paper i de I'interes estrategic que representa per Espanya la utilitzacio de la fusta d'eucaliptus. D'aquesta manera, es volen estudiar nous sistemes enzimatics que puguin deslignificar i blanquejar aquesta pasta.La present tesi s'emmarca dins d'una de les linees d'investigacio del Departament d'Enginyeria Textil i Paperera, de la Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya, encaminada a ('Aplicacio de la Biotecnologia per al Blanqueig de Pastes.Aixi, s'enfoca la recerca cap a la utilitzacio de xilanases per a potenciar el blanqueig en sequencies ECF i TCF, i cap a la utilitzacio de lacases a traves del sistema lacasa-mediador per a blanquejar i deslignifcar la pasta. Degut al gran contingut en acids hexenuronics de les pastes kraft d'eucaliptus, i a la creixent importancia d'aquests en els processos de blanqueig, especial interes es dona en la seva evolucio al Ilarg dels diferents tractaments.Primerament es realitza un escrutini d'actuacio de diferents xilanases tant noves com comercials per tal d'identificar les mes eficients en potenciar el blanqueig. Aquests assajos es realitzen sobre sequencies XD, XP i XDP. Segons les propietats de la pasta d'index kappa, blancor, viscositat i HexA i segons I'analisi per cromatografia en capa fina dels efluents de I'etapa X, s'obte que la xilanasa comercial Xc i que la xilanasa nova XG son les mes eficients en potenciar el blanqueig. La xilanasa nova mes eficient pertany a la familia 11 de les glicosil hidrolases. D'altra banda, s'observa que la xilanasa XJ (familia 5) produeix Ileugers efectes sobre les pastes i que totes les xilanases noves (families 10, 11 i 5) contribueixen a la disminucio del contingut en HexA de les pastes.Seguidament, la millor xilanasa comercial (Xc) i nova (XG) s'apliquen en una sequencia complerta de blanqueig XDEopD1. Degut a I'interes cientific que representa aplicar per primera vegada una xilanasa de la familia 5 sobre les pastes, tambe s'aplica la xilanasa Xj en aquesta sequencia complerta. La xilanasa Xj s'aplica sola i combinada amb la xilanasa XG. Els resultats demostren que amb un pretractament amb xilanasa es milloren les propietats de les pastes al Ilarg de la sequencia i que el pretractament X podria permetre un estalvi en dioxid de clor. A mes, les xilanases no afecten a les propietats fisiques finals dels papers.En segon Iloc, s'aplica el sistema lacasa-mediador (L) sobre les pastes utilitzant HBT com a mediador. L'objectiu d'aquest tractament es d'una banda optimitzar les condicions d'aplicacio del sistema lacasamediador segons les propietats d'index kappa i blancor i d'altra banda veure si el pretractament amb xilanasa es capag de potenciar I'efecte del tractament L. Tambe es vol analitzar com el tractament L afecta als HexA, a la lignina i a la viscositat. Els resultats demostren que a dosis baixes de mediador i a temps curts s'obtenen bones propietats. El tractament L disminueix sobretot la lignina de la pasta tot i que tambe fa disminuir els HexA, i Ileugerament la viscositat. Els esterols de la pasta son tambe eliminats durant aquest tractament. A mes, es demostra que el pretractament X "facilita" I'efecte del sistema lacasa-mediador en eliminar els acids hexenuronics de la pasta. Per I ltim, queda reforgada la necessitat d'aplicar una etapa d'extraccio alcalina posterior a L.Posteriorment, es compara I'efectivitat del mediador NHA respecte I'HBT obtenint resultats molt prometedors amb aquest mediador ja que a part de ser mes barat i potencialment menys toxic que I'HBT, presenta una reaccio de tipus reversible i es tant eficient com aquest I ltim en deslignificar la pasta. Paral·lelament es realitza una recerca de mediadors naturals produits durant el creixement de P.cinnabarinussobre la fusta de pi. Per I ltim, s'aplica per primera vegada la tirosinasa en el blanqueig de pastes i els resultats indiquen que cal continuar la recerca sobre aquesta possible aplicacio biotecnolOgica d'aquest enzim. Aquest bloc d'experiencies s'ha realitzat a l'"Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique" (INRA) de Marsella, Franca.Finalment, es discuteix sobre la importancia dais acids hexenuronics al Ilarg dais processos de blanqueig, i sobre com aquests son eliminats pals diferents tractaments tant quimics corn enzimatics. Es troba la relacio antra aquests acids i I'index kappa de la pasta d'eucaliptus utilitzada.

L’objectiu del projecte presentat aquí (que forma part del projecte CICLE), és conèixer la situació actual d’aprofitament i reciclatge de residus del sector paperer català i fer propostes de millora seguint els principis de l’ecologia industrial. Per això s’ha fet una diagnosi identificant i quantificant els diferents residus produïts per aquesta indústria a Catalunya i el seu destí. Els residus de depuració grollera van actualment a abocador i els fangs de depuració, en una proporció elevada, tampoc no s’aprofiten. Les principals millores proposades són, per tant: la utilització de la tecnologia Rofire® per a l’aprofitament energètic del residu de depuració grollera, que reduiria en un 85,8 % les emissions de CO2 i que seria econòmicament viable quan el cost de l’abocador sigui d’uns 50,88 e/t de residu i la cogeneració utilitzant fangs de depuració com a combustible. Aquesta darrera opció s’hauria d’estudiar a fons per a cada empresa en particular. El objetivo del presente proyecto (que forma parte del proyecto CICLE) es conocer la situación actual de aprovechamiento y reciclaje de residuos del sector papelero en Cataluña y proponer mejoras siguiendo los principios de la ecología industrial. Para ello se ha realizado un diagnóstico identificando y cuantificando los distintos residuos producidos, así como su destino final. Los residuos de depuración grosera actualmente van a vertedero y los lodos de depuración, en una proporción elevada, tampoco se aprovechan. Las principales mejoras propuestas son, por lo tanto: la utilización de la tecnología Rofire® para el aprovechamiento energético del primero de los dos resíduos y la utilización de los lodos de depuración como combustible en un sistema de cogeneración propio. La tecnología Rofire® reduciría en un 85,8 % las emisiones de CO2 y sería económicamente viable cuando el precio de vertido alcance los 50,88 e/t. La opción de la cogeneración debe estudiarse para cada empresa en particular. know the current waste recovery and recycling options in the Catalan paper sector and to identify environmental improvements following the Industrial Ecology principles. A diagnosis has been done to identify and quantify the different wastes obtained as well as their destination. The solid waste from the gross solid filtration previous to waste water treatment is currently going to landfil, as well as the sludge, which mainly is not profitable either. The main proposals for environmental improvement are: the use of Rofire® technology to obtain energy from the first type of waste and the use of sludge as fuel in a cogeneration plant. The Rofire® technology would reduce 85,8 % the CO2 emissions and would be economically feasible when the price of dumping waste would be around 50,88 e/t. The cogeneration option must be studied for each factory especifically.

La presente tesis parte del interés de blanquear pasta de lino (Linum usitatissimum) mediante procesos más respetuosos con el medio ambiente, a partir de secuencias totalmente libre de cloro (TCF) y de la utilización de fibras no madereras para la fabricación de papeles especiales de alta calidad.Asimismo, se ha estudiado la aplicación de enzimas en el blanqueo de pasta de eucalipto (Eucalyptus saligna y Eucalyptus grandis) en la fábrica de Jacareí de Votorantim Celulose e Papel (Brasil) para conseguir una mejora de las propiedades de las pastas y un ahorro de reactivos en la secuencia de blanqueo industrial.Los estudios realizados permiten obtener dos tipos de secuencias para el blanqueo de pasta de lino TCF, ambas con reactivos químicos utilizados individualmente (secuencias químicas) o combinados con tratamientos biotecnológicos (secuencias bioquímicas). Las secuencias químicas incluyen una etapa de ozono y las secuencias bioquímicas incluyen un tratamiento enzimático. Las secuencias bioquímicas constan de etapas que son fácilmente aplicables en la industria, donde la primera de ellas es un sistema lacasa mediador con lacasa comercial de Trametes versicolor y el mediador HBT.En cuanto a los tratamientos biológicos, en primer lugar, se ha estudiado la influencia de la adición de oxígeno y del tiempo de tratamiento en el sistema enzimático y se ha comprobado como influyen ambas variables en las propiedades de la pasta de lino. También se ha estudiado la formación de compuestos cromóforos en la pasta a partir de la determinación de las propiedades ópticas. Posteriormente, se ha realizado un estudio estadístico de las variables de proceso del sistema lacasa mediador y su influencia en las propiedades de las pastas y los efluentes después de cada etapa de blanqueo. La optimización de las variables de tratamiento en el bioblanqueo de lino permite determinar las condiciones de aplicación más adecuadas para conseguir unas determinadas propiedades de la pasta a un menor coste y que resulten fácilmente adaptables a los procesos existentes. Gracias a este estudio, se consigue reducir las dosis de reactivos y el tiempo de tratamiento. El estudio sistemático de cada una de las etapas de blanqueo permite determinar cuál es el efecto sobre la pasta de cada reactivo en cada una de las etapas de las secuencias bioquímicas. Por otro lado, también se ha comprobado como el sistema lacasa mediador es capaz de oxidar ciertos extractivos lipofílicos presentes en la pasta de lino.La optimización de las dosis y el tiempo de tratamiento en el bioblanqueo también se deben tener en cuenta por su influencia en las propiedades de los efluentes, debido a la potencial toxicidad del mediador, como también, a la posible pérdida de actividad enzimática durante el tratamiento. Como novedad, cabe decir, que los valores máximos de toxicidad medidos se encuentran por debajo de los límites que fija la legislación en Cataluña. En este estudio se determina que la pérdida de actividad enzimática en el tratamiento depende básicamente de la dosis de HBT utilizada, por lo que la aplicación de dosis de reactivos superiores a las óptimas, no sólo encarece el proceso de blanqueo, sino que además, una sobredosificación puede dificultar la posible reutilización de estos efluentes de blanqueo.En una segunda parte de la tesis, se estudia la influencia del tratamiento con diversas xilanasas comerciales en las propiedades de la pasta de eucalipto, en las condiciones de blanqueo industriales, a pH y temperatura elevados, en la fábrica de Jacareí de Votorantim Celulose e Papel (Brasil).La aplicación de xilanasas permite una mayor flexibilidad de la secuencia de blanqueo. También, permite ahorrar reactivos químicos, así como incrementar la productividad de aquellas plantas en las que la capacidad de producción de dióxido de cloro es un factor limitante. La aplicación de las xilanasas en la torre de almacenamiento de pasta de la línea de fibras B de la unidad de Jacareí permitiría la mejora de las propiedades de índice kappa y blancura de la pasta en la secuencia de blanqueo industrial. Para ello, no es necesario modificar el proceso existente, lo que es favorable desde el punto de vista industrial, ya que no se requiere una inversión en nuevos equipos. La efectividad del tratamiento enzimático disminuye considerablemente al aumentar la cantidad de licor negro y cuando el pH se encuentra por encima de 10. Por lo que, en el supuesto de que se aplicara un tratamiento enzimático en la torre de almacenamiento, se haría necesario un control, tanto de la cantidad de licor negro presente en la pasta, como del pH antes del punto de aplicación de enzima., The aim of this thesis is to bleach flax pulp (Linum usitatissimum) by more friendly environmental processes, using totally chlorine free sequences (TCF) and non-wood fibers for the manufacture of high quality specialty papers. This work is framed by one of the research topics in the Textile and Paper Engineering Department of the Technical University of Catalonia. Part of this research topic is based on bleaching fibers, focused basically on the study of new bleaching agents and biotechnology application. Likewise, enzyme application has been studied in eucalyptus pulp bleaching (Eucalyptus saligna and Eucalyptus grandis) in Jacareí Mill of Votorantim Celulose e Papel (Brazil) in order to obtain an improvement of the pulp properties and reagent savings in the industrial bleaching sequence. Performed studies allow to obtain two kinds of TCF sequences for flax pulp bleaching, both with chemical reagents used individually (chemical sequences) or combined with biotechnological treatments (biochemical sequences). Before beginning the bleaching sequences studies, the ozonation pilot plant has been modified. This plant was designed by the research group CIPAGRAF. A new design has been carried out improving the distribution of the equipments, pipelines and valves, basically to minimize delay times in ozone measurements. Chemical sequences include an ozone stage and biochemical sequences include an enzymatic treatment. The biochemical sequences include stages that are easily applicable in the industry. The first one is a laccase-mediator system with a commercial laccase from Trametes versicolor and mediator HBT.Regarding biological treatments, firstly, the influence of oxygen addition and treatment time has been studied in the enzymatic system. Both variables have been proven to have influence on flax pulp properties. The formation of chromophores compounds in pulp has been also studied from the determination of optical properties. Later, it has been carried out a statistical study of the process variables in laccase-mediator system and their influence in pulp and effluent properties after each bleahing stage. References have not been almost found on pulp properties modeling as a function of the variables in an enzymatic process in this enclosed operation conditions regarding a future industrial application. Process variables optimization in flax pulp biobleaching allows to establish the application conditions most appropriated to obtain certain pulp properties to a lower cost and that turn out to be easily adaptable to existing processes. The results show that a reduction of reagent doses and treatment time can be obtained, and the study allows establishing those conditions which the system is not effective. The systematic study of each one of the bleaching stages allows determining the effect on the pulp of each reagent in each of the stages of the biochemical sequences. On the other hand, it has been proved that laccase-mediator system is capable of oxidize certain lipophilic compounds on flax pulp.Besides, it must be also considered the influence of the process variables in effluent properties, due to the potential toxicity of mediator and possible enzymatic activity loss during the treatment. It is necessary to emphasize that studies on effluent characterization depending on process variables in laccase mediator system have not been found. As a novelty, maximum values of toxicity measured are below the legal limit that determines legislation in Catalonia. It has been also observed, that effluent toxicity in L stage is not only due to the presence of mediator HBT, but by-products of degradation show a major toxicity than the HBT in its initial form. In this study, enzymatic activity loss depends basically on the HBT dose. Therefore, a reagent dose application higher to the optimal doses, not only increases bleaching cost, but in addition, an overdosage can avoid the possible reutilization of bleaching effluents.In the second part of the thesis, the study is based on the influence of an enzymatic treatment with commercial xylanases on eucalyptus pulp properties at the industrial bleaching conditions, high pH and temperature, in Jacareí Mill of Votorantim Celulosa e Papel (Brazil). Xylanase application allows a major flexibility of the bleaching sequence. Moreover, it allows chemical reagents saving, as well an increase of productivity in those mills in which the production capacity of chlorine dioxide is a limiting factor, as it is the case of Jacareí's Mill. Xylanase application in storage tower would allow pulp properties improvement, like kappa number and brightness, in the industrial bleaching sequence. For this, it is not necessary to modify the existing process, which is an advantage from an industrial point of view, since an investment in new equipments is not needed. Enzymatic treatment efficiency decreases considerably when black liquor amount is increased and when the pH is over 10. For this reason, if an enzymatic treatment was applied in the storage tower, a control would become necessary for black liquor amount in pulp and for pH before the enzyme application point.

La motivació per a la realització d'aquest projecte sorgeix de la problemàtica ambiental ja coneguda que existeix amb relació a la contaminació produïda pels reactius utilitzats en el blanqueig de pastes per a paper, i per l'interès en la utilització de matèries primes anuals, com per exemple els residus agrícoles.La present tesi forma part de les línies d'investigació en el blanqueig de pastes per a paper que es porten a terme en el laboratori de l'Especialitat Paperera i Gràfica del Departament d'Enginyeria Tèxtil i Paperera de la Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, essent la primera tesi que es realitza en temes de blanqueig amb ozó i d'utilització d'enzims. Mitjançant els estudis realitzats s'arriba a obtenir una seqüència totalment lliure de clor (TCF) que inclou una etapa de blanqueig amb ozó (Z) i un tractament enzimàtic amb xilanasa (X), amb la qual s'aconsegueix obtenir una pasta blanquejada d'Eucalyptus amb propietats finals de les pastes, papers i efluents comparables amb les d'una seqüència ECF. Aquesta seqüència de blanqueig és també aplicable a una pasta de palla de blat, amb la qual s'obté bones propietats finals. Així doncs, el present treball d'investigació tracta bàsicament tres qüestions:La primera consisteix en l'increment de la selectivitat del blanqueig amb ozó per al qual es realitza un estudi de l'aplicació de diferents tractaments abans, durant i després d'aquest estadi. Els resultats obtinguts mostren que és convenient realitzar un postractament amb borohidrur sòdic ja que és molt eficient degut al seu elevat potencial reductor de grups carbonil, la qual cosa es corrobora amb l'estudi realitzat sobre el número de talls en la cadena cel·lulòsica (CS). Pel que fa als diferents pretractaments i additius aplicats, aquests últims són més beneficiosos, i en concret els que es realitzen a pH àcid, indicant que el pH té un efecte important en la selectivitat de l'etapa Z, cosa que es confirma amb els estudis cinètics realitzats, i que a més està relacionat amb la major formació de radicals hidroxil a pH alcalí. La naturalesa de l'additiu utilitzat a pH àcid també influeix en la selectivitat de l'etapa Z. Dels diferents additius estudiats i aplicats a pH entre 2 i 3, l'àcid oxàlic és el més eficient ja que presenta un efecte "addicional" a la resta d'additius diferent al pH, influint positivament en la cinètica de la etapa Z ja que augmenta la cinètica de deslignificació i disminueix la de degradació de la cel·lulosa. A través dels estudis realitzats es dedueix que aquest efecte addicional de l'àcid oxàlic és degut a un conjunt de factors: captador de radicals hidroxil, estabilitzador de l'ozó, disminució de l'inflament de la cel·lulosa, catalitzador de les reaccions de l'ozó i/o radicals amb la lignina, aportador d'hidrogen i quelant de cations metàl·lics. La dosi necessària d'àcid oxàlic és molt petita i inclús inferior a la quantitat que es forma en el propi estadi. Per tant, en cas de tancament de circuits, es podria realitzar una recirculació dels efluents dins de l'estadi Z, aprofitant el propi àcid oxàlic que es forma en aquesta etapa.La segona part està basada en l'estudi del pretractament enzimàtic amb xilanasa aplicat en una seqüència TCF de pasta d'Eucalyptus amb la qual cosa s'aconsegueix un efecte "estimulador" del blanqueig, ja que s'incrementa la facilitat de blanquejar en els posteriors estadis de blanqueig, cosa que permet una reducció del consum de reactius. Aquest efecte es relaciona amb l'eliminació de xilans i de grups hexenurònics que es confirma amb els estudis de microscopia electrònica d'escombrat (SEM) i de determinació d'hidrats de carboni per HPLC. Amb els estudis cinètics realitzats s'obté que amb el tractament X s'elimina una part de lignina que no s'aconsegueix eliminar durant el blanqueig amb ozó. El tercer tema es l'aplicació de la seqüència TCF obtinguda, en pasta de palla de blat, amb la modificació d'alguna de les condicions, obtenint resultats no tan favorables com amb l'Eucalyptus, però realment bons tractant-se d'una pasta de palla. Les tècniques d'anàlisi utilitzades -determinació d'hidrats de carboni mitjançant HPLC, observació de la superfície de la fibra utilitzant la microscopia electrònica d'escombrat (SEM) i de transmissió (TEM), determinació de cations metàl·lics per espectroscopia d'absorció atòmica, diferents tècniques per a la determinació de la cristal·linitat i el grau d'oxidació de les fibres, estudis cinètics de l'etapa de blanqueig amb ozó i determinació de grups hexenurònics per espectroscopia UV- han permès una major comprensió dels mecanismes de reacció que tenen lloc en la seqüència estudiada. Així doncs, estudiant l'efecte de l'àcid oxàlic s'aconsegueix saber quins són els requisits que ha de complir un additiu per a ser el més eficient possible en el blanqueig amb ozó.Finalment s'ha d'indicar que part d'aquests estudis s'han realitzat en el Centre Technique du Papier (CTP) de Grenoble (França) i en el Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) d'Estocolm (Suècia).

La industria papelera al igual que la industria textil basa su razón de existir en el aspecto fibroso de los materiales que trabaja. Punto común entre las dos industrias y además punto de partida de ambas. El secado del papel obedece a los mismos principios que aquél de los textiles. En países donde la industria papelera limite el nombre de ingenieros por condiciones adversas y no sea rentable el instalar una escuela que sea totalmente autónoma, puede ser interesante que se comparta el edificio y algunas de sus instalaciones así como los gastos de profesorado con otra escuela textil.

The final authenticated version is available online at: https://doi.org/10.1007/s10570-019-02678-5 Bacterial cellulose (BC) was functionalized applying the Laccase/TEMPO oxidative treatment, leading to a five-fold increase of the concentration of carboxyl groups. Paper produced with this cellulose showed improved mechanical properties while maintaining barrier function against water and greases as compared to paper produced with non-oxidized BC. Also, the negative charge provided by the carboxyl groups on functionalized BC was used to generate silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), obtaining a BC paper and Ag composite. The presence of AgNPs in the composites was validated by SEM, EDS and ICP analysis, showing spherical, uniformly sized particles stabilized in the BC nanofibers matrix. Additionally, antimicrobial property of composites containing AgNPs was tested. The results showed the strong antimicrobial activity of the composites against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and fungi. The generation of Ag nanoparticles in a matrix that combine the physical characteristics of the BC nanofibers with the stiffness and the mechanical properties of paper produced composites that may have applicability in technological and biomedical uses

In the first part of the present work, relevant findings concerning the laccase (Lacc) activation of alkyl gallates, and its implementation in developing hydrophobic properties on cellulose-based substrates are reported. Surface state energy by water contact angle (CA), absorption tests, and Cobb60 measurements were used to assess the hydrophobic behavior of treated substrates. SEM images of paper samples treated with functionalization solutions (FS) revealed the presence of lauryl gallate (LG, dodecyl 3,4,5,-trihydroxybenzoate) particles attached to fiber surfaces. Secondly, the chemical structure of the enzyme-oxidized LG and several gallates of variable chain length was elucidated by using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and a plausible oxidation mechanism was developed. Based on them, the hydrocarbon chain of LG remains unaltered after enzyme oxidation, while the aromatic ring is significantly altered to form acidic adducts undergoing strong hydrogen bonding. Possible routes for the grafting of enzyme-modified LG to cellulose are proposed.

Actualmente en todo el mundo se consume una gran cantidad de papel reciclado. Ello ha provocado la fabricación de papel que contiene muchos tipos de impurezas, por lo que las empresas papeleras se están viendo con la necesidad de desarrollar métodos para controlar la calidad del papel entrante para así garantizar su calidad. Para ello en este trabajo se investiga un método muy rápido y no destructivo para identificar diferentes tipos de papel que permita desechar el papel entrante que no cumpla con unos requisitos mínimos de calidad. De este modo se puede mejorar el comportamiento de la máquina de papel y al mismo tiempo asegurar la calidad del producto final. Ello se hace en base al estudio de los espectros FTIR (espectroscopia del infrarrojo medio por transformada de Fourier)y NIR (espectroscopia del infrarrojo cercano) tratados mediante ICA (análisis de componentes independientes) como técnica multivariable de extracción de características para reducir la cantidad de variables utilizadas y k-NN k vecinos más cercanos) como técnica de clasificación. Los resultados experimentales muestran que es posible identificar con éxito más de un 90% de las muestras estudiadas, de una forma rápida, muy automatizada y de forma no destructiva

This research work develops new methods to produce biodegradable starch-based trays for the purpose of replacing expanded polystyrene in the food packaging market. The starch based biopolymers present several drawbacks like poor mechanical properties and very high density. In order to overcome these drawbacks two research lines have been set up: blending thermoplastic starch with biobased reinforcements from agricultural wastes like barley straw and grape wastes and testing the foamability of these materials with a Microwave-foaming method

El disseny d’aquest procés comporta una sèrie d’etapes necessàries per al tractament del paperot i la fabricació del producte desitjat ( paper per ondular). La fàbrica on es produeix el paper per ondular es divideix en les diferents seccions: preparació de pastes, secció humida de la màquina de paper, secció seca de la màquina de paper, zona de acabat i zona de tractament d’aigua. En la zona de preparació de pastes ,es produeix la desintegració del paperot i la neteja dels contaminats que conté . A continuació, a la zona humida de la màquina de paper, es procedeix a la formació de la fulla i es premsa posteriorment. En la zona seca, es produeix el secat del paper mitjançant una bateria de assecadors, que proporciona una sequedat al paper de l’ordre del 90-95%. Un cop surt el paper dels assecadors, passa per la llisa i a continuació, per la pope (on s’enrotlla el paper en forma de bobines). Les bobines mare que surten de la màquina de paper i són enrotllades a la pope, han de tallar-se en bobines més petites ,segons la mida requerida pel client ( aquesta operació es produeix a la bobinadora). Un cop formada la bobina, passa per una retractiladora on la bobina s’embala amb plàstic. A la zona de tractament d’aigües, hi ha una unitat de flotació que permet recuperar les fibres de l’aigua blanca i reutilitzar-les en el procés, així com l’aigua blanca és recirculada cap al pulper. D’aquesta manera es permet l’aprofitament de l’aigua blanca en el pulper i l’aigua que surtclarificada, s’aprofita en els ruixadors de la màquina de paper.

We present a new method of measure of the roughness based on the analysis of the texture of speckle pattern on the surface. Images of speckle pattern over the surface are captured by means of a simple configuration using a laser, beam expander, and a camera charge coupled device (CCD). Using the properties of the normalized covariance function that we obtained from the image of the speckle through the inverse Fourier transform, we relate the values of the normalized covariance function. We compare the results obtained with a confocal microscope and co-occurrence matrices method. This method can be considered as a noncontact surface profiling method that is easy to implement and can be used during the manufacturing process.
